Maximalism in a post-modern society (2022)

Digital

This editorial illustration project delves into the post-modern experiences of Gen Z during pandemic quarantine, using maximalism to capture the complex and fragmented nature of their lives. Through the depiction of four distinct girls—each with a unique sense of fashion and personality—this project highlights how they navigate spaces filled with chaotic objects, choosing either detachment, idle activities, or whimsical actions like placing flowers in unlikely places. Even as social platforms attempt to engage them, they remain indifferent, reflecting a generation’s craving for stronger mental stimulation amid sensory overload. In this age where maximalism has resurged, the individuality it once represented is now diluted by mechanical reproduction, mass production, and self-labeling. The illustrations explore how, in their search for identity and originality on social media, Gen Z is losing touch with the intrinsic meaning of objects, revealing a broader existential tension within a hyper-connected, yet emotionally distant, society.
